Some gay residents of Atlanta, angry over the choice of the Rev. Rick Warren to speak at the Martin Luther King Commemorative Service at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, say they will show up in force Monday to protest.
Warren, who runs a huge evangelical church in California, helped ban same-sex marriage in his state.
“Having Rick Warren speak is an affront to the Civil Rights Movement and its tone of unity,” Todd Vierling of Atlanta, who is helping organize the protest, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We are all in the same fight for equal rights for everybody.”
Warren, who is pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., has been chosen by President-elect Barack Obama to pray at the inauguration in Washington, D.C., the day after the King event.
Obama has also been under fire from gay advocates for his choice.
